Sundance 2009 Distribution Panel: Comprehensive Overview of Indie Film Distribution as of Jan. 2009
There was a panel held on Sunday January 18th, 2009 at Sundance entitled "What's Next? Models and Experiments in Indie Distribution."
Panelists included:
Lance Hammer - director of last year's Sundance hit Ballast (Hammer famously turned down an offer from IFC and has been self-distributing Ballast, with modest results),
Matt Dentler - former programmer of SXSW and currently head of Cinetic's Digital Rights arm,
Connie White - veteran exhibitor and member of the Sundance Arthouse Project,
Christian Gaines - Withoutabox Director of Festivals,
MJ Peckos - founder of niche market distributor Mitropoulos Films (above photo is from the 2007 Mitropoulos documentary, The Price of Sugar),
Cora Olson - producer of 2008 Sundance film Good Dick and
Steven Raphael - (no picture available) founder of indie sales and marketing company Required Viewing, currently consulting with Lance Hammer on Ballast.
Here is an audio file of the entire discussion recorded by Scott Kirsner, who moderated the panel and helpfully made an audio recording on his iPhone.
A full video or better quality audio recording may become available on the Sundance site, but these video excerpts and the iPhone version will have to do for now.
