Netflix or Amazon? What Indie Filmmakers Need to Know About Distribution Deals From Online Streaming Platforms


In a March 19th, 2015 (post-SXSW - pre-Cannes) article for The Hollywood Reporter, Pamela McClintock compares the release plans currently being offered to indie producers by Netflix (premiere online and in theaters on the same day - what movie business insiders call "day-and-date") and Amazon (theatrical release followed by an online release):


"Unlike Netflix, Amazon will debut its movies first in theaters and then offer an exclusive early window four to eight weeks later, presumably giving filmmakers the best of both worlds. Says one agent: 'That’s where Amazon can be competitive.'"
