Tilt Shift: The City of Samba

The City of Samba from Jarbas Agnelli on Vimeo.

If we take a motion picture of a large object but reduce the depth of field to a narrow slice - blurring everything except a small portion of the image - the picture appears to be of a miniature. One way of accomplishing this effect is through the use of a "tilt shift" lens - and the tilt shift effect can be enhanced by time-lapse cinematography (stringing still images together - so that several minutes of real time seem to fly by in several seconds of screen time).

The tilt shift video above was made in Rio de Janeiro during Carnaval 2011 by Keith Loutit and Jarbas Agnelli. Thanks to Ted Hope for the link.
