Interactivity and Mobile Engagement

Hello Lamp Post was created by Tom Armitage and Sam Hill as an interactive project to "promote the idea of a living, breathing, “playable” city."

For two months in the summer of 2013,  residents and visitors to Bristol, England were encouraged to interact with specific inanimate objects in the city using Twilio Messaging

Tom and Sam's work involved a number of innovations including "conversation logic," such that whatever was said to an object became a part of that object’s memory, informing future conversations. For example, when someone would interact with a specific mailbox, the  mailbox might remember a previous conversation and say, “Apparently, there was a double parked car behind me. Is it still there?”

Thanks to Siobhan O'Flynn and Simon Staffans for sharing this.
