The 5 Types of Film Festivals: Essential Basic Information for Indie Filmmakers

There are two types of people in the world:

Those who like to categorize complex information into distinct categories, and those who don't.

If you're one of the former, then a short March 2013 blogpost by the staff of the Raindance Toronto (the filmmaker training program that has grown out of the Raindance festival) - about the 5 categories of film festivals - is for you.

Every wonder how film professionals distinguish between the majors (e.g., Sundance, Cannes and Toronto) and the mini-majors (e.g. Tribeca)?

Although there is growing evidence that SXSW belongs in the major category - I generally think this blogpost gets it right - and should be helpful to newbies.
