Art House Films in the Summer of 2009: The best of times? The worst of times?


Summer 2009 was a pretty good season for art house films, with several films posting solid numbers: "(500) Days of Summer" ($19 million), "Away We Go" ($9 million) and "The Hurt Locker" ($11 million). But, according to this Aug. 19 report from Reuters, the recession and foreign competition have also forced some veteran companies, along with new players including Beastie Boy Adam Yauch's Oscilloscope Pictures, to retrench.
